In the film world storytelling goes beyond entertainment and serves as a mirror for reflecting societal values, issues, and cultural dynamics. My short film aims to try and capture the complexities of disparity between class and human apathy through storytelling and character interactions as well as cinematic action.
One of the central themes of my short film is the contrast between the classes. Through the use of costumes and dialogue as well as most importantly, acting and setting. My Film aims to create a critique of the disparity of wealth and the indifference of the upper class when dealing with the struggles of the lower class. The protagonist of my film is a wealthy man who lives in the nice neighborhoods of South Florida. The status is revealed through the beginning scenes with the Large modern house, expensive car which was parked in the driveway, as well as the the luxurious furniture and large rooms as displayed in the film. The Costume helps portray this with a dark blue and white floral button up paired with cream linen pants, this portrays luxury as no regular person would be wearing clothing as such. This also shows his laid back, luxurious lifestyle that shows he is unconcerned with any struggles other than the little struggles he has. However, the antagonist is portrayed as the lower-class/working force individual, introduced with a suit and a dirty rag over the shoulder displaying the struggles certain people of the lower class have to go through. The difference between the two is highlighted when they begin interacting. When the antagonist asks for assistance, the protagonist shows his disinterest with his dismissive tone, annoyed look, and refusal to help or engage in a proper conversation. The disdain for eye contact as well as hes main focus to finish preparing meal, are all used to reinforce the division between the social classes. This powerful exchange displays how wealth as well as privilege can lead to the wealth's detachment from realities of people less fortunate
When it comes to film making, branding is a very important as well as crucial aspect of film marketing, my production was able to show many visual themes and elements to be able to give it a strong identity. The marketing materials often prominently feature color of red, black, and white. Red shows and signals the intensity as well as danger, the black create a sense of mystery and the unknown, and the white lets the imagery stand out. These colors are displayed across the website as well as posters, social media, this allows for a great aesthetic. The materials used for promotion are focused on the action imagery rather than marketing character marketing. Avoiding the portrayal of the actors and their faces, the branding help shifts the audience focus toward the the themes and action sequences of the film instead of the individual performances. The use of the imagery in the promotion materials which is the use of weapons help show the identity of the film which is an action thriller. The simple design of the website with the bold font/lettering as well as the contrast visuals help with the branding making sure everything ties back to the films theme. The constant design shown across each platform helps it create a recognizable identity for the film making it stand out.
Making sure to Engage with the audience is very important and essential for film success, my production makes sure to show multiple strategies to create an interactive and immersive experience. The goal was to create anticipation as well as an interest in the film before the audience could even view the film. The website plays a huge role in engaging with the audience. It was made to be interactive making to sure to feature information about the film, behind-the-scenes content, and interactive elements that engage with the audience. The contacting section allows the audience to be able to reach out with questions and allow for a certain connection to the production. Instagram, which is one of the social medias that was used, is a very crucial engagement tool. The Instagram page showed footage behind the scenes, glimpses of how certain shots were done, and overall just media of how certain things were done to be able to accomplish the scene. By adding insight such as this, it allows for audiences to appreciate and recognize the effort and the skill which was involved into creating certain sequences to life. The withholding of showing certain scenes and plot points helps create mystery, anticipation as well as curiosity, leading to audiences waiting for the final product. Another engagement strategy is to release content to tease hints at the story line of the film without showing too much. This ensures that the audience remains interested as well as eager to discover the narrative. Blending interactivity, behind-the-scenes media, and promotional techniques, my film aim to create a strong connection with its audience.
Research played a huge role in shaping and creating the film, letting me to use and subvert genre conventions to be able to create a unique/creative cinematic experience. Since it was an action film, my production adheres to certain convention as well as incorporating unexpected elements that challenge the expectations of the audience. When researching I looked and analyzed many action films to understand the camera angles, as well as music for certain fight sequences, choreography to create proper scenes that show thriller and can engage the viewer with a good viewing experience. Dynamic camera movements which consist of handheld shots and rapid cuts, I looked at these movements to be able to incorporate into my film and make sure these sequences felt intense as well as immersive. Even though my film embraces many classic action conventions, it also overturns expectations by using elements from other genres. A separation of traditional action films is the comedic relief/ending at the conclusion of the film. Many action films have a tone that is consistent through the film, however introducing. The abrupt tonal shift from intense action to lighthearted comedy forces viewers to reassess their perception of the film, adding depth and replay value. The mix of these genres help my film stand out and separate itself from the traditional action genre. Making sure it is traditional enough to attract action fans but also offering a new experience that makes it differ from the conventional action films.
In Conclusion when it came to creating my short film, I aimed to create a product that is relevant socially and cinematically engaging. Through the character construction, my film is able to critique the disparity of class and is able to highlight the emotional detachment that stems from privilege. The elements of branding are able to establish a clear/consistent identity which goes with the films thriller and action genres. Ultimately, my short film is a reflection of artistic vision and social commentary. My research into how action films are created and its conventions helped me make intense and visually appealing sequences while adding unexpected elements to battle the traditional structure of the action genre. Being able to mix certain themes with action and branding, it is able to serve as a contribution to film making being able to leave audiences engaged and entertained.
